It’s the perfect starting point for exploring the famous coastal city, which – unusually for a Moroccan city – has a palpable Mediterranean charm, particularly in the old town. This blend of cultures has led Tangier to develop some very special features, including worship of the djinn, a practice long rooted in this area. These supernatural beings were honoured in various locations, including the rocks of Lalla Jmila and Sidi Hammou, where women prayed for love and fertility. While the rocks no longer exist, on Saturdays, people offer up candles, slaughtered chickens and orange blossom water at the Sidi Mimoun shrine on the outskirts of the medina.
