Jemaa el-Fnaa, the heart of Marrakesh

Royal city – feast for the senses

Performers compete for the audience’s attention. Visitors make their way between snake charmers, monkey trainers, artists, musicians, clairvoyants, storytellers, artisans, sellers and cooks – in this case, the journey is the destination. The main square, Jemaa el-Fnaa, is the red city’s top sight, as fascinating for locals as it is for tourists. Nowhere is the spirit of Morocco more palpable than here.

Spend the evenings strolling through dozens of food stalls and indulging in Moroccan cuisine with all your senses – grilled delicacies, tagine, preserves, sweet temptations … a Moroccan holiday wouldn’t be the same without it!

Shopping in a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Explore Marrakesh freely: the winding alleys of the medieval medina (old town) form part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Densely populated and surrounded by walls from the Berber period, this is the most beautiful place to shop. Delve into bustling souks (markets) and let yourself be carried along. Moroccan craftsmanship, jewellery, pottery, silver cutlery, lamps, Berber rugs, traditional clothing … give in to the magic of the extraordinary atmosphere!

Majorelle Garden: A botanical oasis much loved by Yves Saint Laurent …

Relax in the ‘pearl of the south’

The Majorelle Garden is an exotic botanical paradise, the perfect place to stroll and take pictures. Spanning around 4,000sqm, it features plants from 5 continents – including stunning cacti and bougainvillea – as well as a bamboo forest. The garden provided inspiration for Yves Saint Laurent’s fashion collections. In 1980, he bought the garden, saved it from ruin and held legendary parties here for the international jet set. Following his death in 2008, his ashes were scattered in a private section of the garden.

The Yves Saint Laurent Museum is located right next to the Majorelle Garden and is dedicated to the designer’s legacy – including his sketches, garments, accessories and photos – and to Moroccan and Islamic art.

The spiritual heart of the medina: Ben Youssef Madrasa

Islamic culture at its most beautiful

A former Koran school. A jewel of Moorish architecture and most stunning example of mosaic art: Ben Youssef Madrasa. Founded way back in the 14th century, it mesmerises visitors with its magnificent stucco decorations. The mosque – the spiritual and religious heart of the old town and the largest mosque in the medina – is just next door. Simply breathtaking!

The country’s emblem: Koutoubia Mosque and minaret

Towering above the ochre city

The minaret of the famous Koutoubia Mosque is 70m tall. It has long been the emblem of both the city and Morocco as a whole. This is the largest mosque in Marrakesh and dates from the 12th century.

Nothing in the city is photographed quite as much as the silhouette of the minaret rising up behind Jemaa el-Fnaa, the main square. Particularly at sunset!
