Landmark: Hassan II Mosque
The world’s third-largest mosque
Just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic, Hassan II Mosque is an architectural masterpiece and the emblem of the city by the sea. It was completed in 1993 and can accommodate almost 100,000 people. The 200-metre-high minaret can be seen from far and wide, the mosque itself breathtaking in both size and appearance.
The stunning prayer hall, adorned with onyx, marble and granite, can hold up to 20,000 worshippers. Artisans from all over Morocco have made their mark here, working with marble, wood, mosaics, carpets, frescos, stucco and arabesques.
Casablanca’s medina
Small but perfectly formed
Casablanca’s old town is a different world compared with the rest of the modern metropolis. Narrow streets, little bazaars where goods are transported on carts, traditionally clothed water sellers, knife sharpeners and artisans – Moroccan life up close. Casablanca’s medina is Morocco’s youngest old town; after being destroyed by an earthquake in 1755, it was rebuilt with love and charm.
Habous Quarter – new medina
Authentic life beyond the hustle and bustle
The Habous Quarter in the south of the city is a combination of traditional and modern architecture, bringing together traders, artisans and leather souks. The pretty streets are perfect for a relaxing stroll among little shops, traditional buildings, beautiful arcades, gardens, workshops, bookshops and more … Life here is a little calmer than in downtown Casablanca.
