GRAND & PETIT SOCCO
The Grand Socco is the most important market square in the coastal city between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. It links the new town to the medina, and can be very lively, as is typical for Moroccan cities. Little shops sit alongside restaurants, cafés, cinemas … grab a seat in a terrace café and watch the hustle and bustle before diving into the Spanish-influenced Petit Socco.
A major farmers’ market takes place twice a week in the Grand Socco, hosting the region’s farmers, and Berber women in their traditional outfits.
Kasbah with ocean view
LIVELY DISTRICT WITH ART AND HANDICRAFTS
The mud-brick fortress towers over Tangier from the top of the hill. Few places offer such breathtaking views of the bay and coast as the observation platforms in the kasbah. What makes the Tangier kasbah so special? From the old fortress on the hill, you can enter an entire kasbah district with little streets, colourful houses, small shops and businesses selling handicrafts and fantastic paintings. A must-see in Tangier!
Visit the kasbah museum, and you will understand the turbulent history of this strategically valuable city. Bonus: the museum’s beautiful gardens.
Tangier medina
Shop Morocco – and drink tea
The Tangier medina isn’t Morocco’s largest old town, but it is extremely authentic. It exudes the atmosphere of everyday Moroccan life with busy markets frequented mainly by locals. Every trade has its own little quarter. Let yourself be swept along, take in the exotic scents, go shopping by Africa’s most beautiful gateway – and drink mint tea on one of the shaded terraces.
If you want to buy something, you absolutely have to haggle. Need some help from a local? Your Private Guide will show you how it’s done.
Tangier beach life
Stunning white beach
Tangier Beach in Tangier Bay attracts many visitors with its central location and fine white sand. Swim, sunbathe, sail or water ski until the sun goes down. In the evening, the long beach promenade is filled with life and music. Sporty types do back flips on the sand, children ride ponies and families picnic by the sea’s edge.
Explore the beaches and the highlights of the area: Cape Spartel with the Caves of Hercules, Cape Malabata with Château Malabata or the fishing town of Ksar es-Seghir.
Mur des Paresseux
Breathtaking viewing platform
A wonderful panoramic view of Tangier’s port, Spain and of the strait between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the Strait of Gibraltar. Yearning for another world? Standing on the terrace, you can understand why Tangier attracted celebrated creators such as Eugène Delacroix, Henri Matisse, the Rolling Stones, Tennessee Williams, Jack Kerouac and Truman Capote.
Mendoubia Garden
A dragon tree over 800 years old
A picturesque setting. An idyllic green oasis in the midst of a bustling coastal city. The Mendoubia Garden captivates visitors with its exotic plants and its centuries-old fig and dragon trees (one is said to be over 800 years old). These days, the 30 bronze cannons from old Mediterranean fleets are purely ornamental. A powerful place to take a breath amidst the bustle of the city.
