Located approximately 40 km east of Ouarzazate at an altitude of around 1,220 metres, Skoura is one of southern Morocco’s most remarkable oases. Covering around 25 square kilometres, its extensive palm grove is home to numerous traditional villages, known as douars, where agriculture continues to shape everyday life.
Self-sufficiency remains a way of life here. Alongside date palms, farmers cultivate olives, almonds, barley, alfalfa, apricots, figs, pomegranates and apples.
Walking through the oasis reveals remarkable engineering achievements from centuries past. Particularly in the northern areas, visitors can still discover remnants of the ancient Khettara irrigation system – underground channels that transported precious water across long distances, making agriculture possible in this arid landscape. Many of these historic water systems remain intact, offering fascinating insight into the ingenuity of earlier generations.
