Jemaa el-Fnaa Square

This central square, together with the Medina, the Kasbah, the Medersa and the Agdal and Menara Gardens, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. It brings together culture, entertainment and gastronomy in a lively atmosphere, making it a vibrant cultural hub that never sleeps. The narrow alleyways and riads of the Medina stand as witnesses to Moroccan architecture that brings the tales of One Thousand and One Nights into the present day.

Vibrant centre: bustling markets by day, and by night street food, snake charmers, musicians and storytellers bring the square to life.

Gateway to the desert

For those looking to escape the intensity and bustle of Marrakesh, or to experience something truly unique within a short time, the nearby Agafay Desert – often called the Marrakesh Desert – is easily reached from the city. Stylish desert camps offer overnight stays in modern luxury tents, authentic experiences and a range of exciting activities set against a spectacular desert landscape.

If time allows, a multi-day Sahara road trip is well worth it – for example to the dunes of Erg Chebbi, around eight hours from Marrakesh, where visitors can experience activities such as dune surfing.

Highest concentration of golf courses

The Marrakesh region boasts a total of 14 golf courses, making it one of the leading golf destinations in Morocco. Among the top five are the well-maintained Akenza Golf Resort, the nature-inspired Fairmont Royal Palm Golf & Country Club, the Assoufid Golf Club set in a desert-style landscape with views of the Atlas Mountains, the Atlas Golf Marrakesh with its excellent restaurant and spa, and the Royal Golf de Marrakesh with 27 holes, once played by Winston Churchill.

Discover a unique golfing oasis: Noria Golf Club, where the course winds its way through olive groves, lavender fields and desert landscapes.

Jardin Majorelle, Menara & Agdal

Among the most famous gardens of Marrakesh are historic Islamic garden complexes as well as influential botanical and private gardens. The most well known is Jardin Majorelle, one of the most visited attractions in the country. The Agdal Gardens, together with the Menara Gardens, form an extensive garden system that is listed as part of Marrakesh’s historic city on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The ANIMA Garden by André Heller, located just outside Marrakesh, combines modern art installations, water features and exotic plants in a unique desert garden setting.

Story & facts

Since Morocco gained independence in 1956, Marrakesh has undergone significant transformation and has become one of North Africa’s most important cultural and tourism centres. The so-called “Red City”, whose historic old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, began attracting international artists, travellers and designers from the 1960s onwards. Fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent discovered the city in 1966 and drew lasting inspiration from it.

A major earthquake in 2023 caused damage to historic buildings and parts of the Medina. Many sites have since been carefully restored and now shine once again in renewed splendour. Today, Marrakesh blends its centuries-old history with a vibrant contemporary spirit: alongside traditional souks, modern neighbourhoods, boutique riads, art galleries and international festivals shape the city’s dynamic character.

Legendary souk in the medina

The most enchanting part of Marrakesh is the maze of narrow alleyways in the medieval Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Densely built and surrounded by ancient walls dating back to the Berber period, the area is home to bustling souks filled with intoxicating energy. Fine Moroccan jewellery, pottery, silverware, oriental lamps, Berber carpets and countless other treasures tempt visitors to explore and shop.

Moroccan craftsmanship

Those interested in unique artisanal pieces should visit two remarkable museums: the Musée du Patrimoine, a heritage museum displaying carpets, pottery, coins, kaftans and calligraphy, and the Musée Dar Si Said, which offers one of the finest overviews of traditional Berber craftsmanship. Also worth a visit is the Musée de Mouassine, a historic 17th–18th century building restored to reflect its original appearance.

Golf, hiking, trekking & biking

Beyond several excellent golf courses and desert quad or buggy tours, the nearby Lake Lalla Takerkoust offers activities such as boat trips, jet skiing, surfing and paragliding. Nature lovers can enjoy hiking and trekking in the Atlas Mountains, including expeditions to Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa. The surrounding countryside of Marrakesh also attracts mountain bikers with its forests and valleys.

Landmark: Koutoubia Minaret

For centuries, the 70-metre-high minaret of the famous Koutoubia Mosque, built in the 12th century, has been the defining landmark of Marrakesh and one of Morocco’s most iconic sights. Rising above the heart of the city near Jemaa el-Fnaa square, its silhouette forms one of the most photographed views in the city of dreams, especially at sunset.

Palmeraie, gardens & oases

A peaceful retreat from the city’s vibrant energy can be found in the Palmeraie of Marrakesh, home to around 100,000 palm trees spread across 15,000 hectares. Historic palm groves, scenic viewpoints towards the Atlas Mountains and inviting cafés create an ideal setting for relaxation. The Jardin Majorelle, once owned by Yves Saint Laurent, and other botanical gardens also offer tranquil escapes surrounded by exotic plants and fragrant flowers.

Le Jardin Secret

Hidden within the historic Medina lies a small gem: Le Jardin Secret. Behind the high walls of a traditional palace, visitors discover an exotic garden filled with fountains, fragrant lemon trees and birdsong. Climb the red tower for beautiful views across the rooftops of the “Red City”, then enjoy a fresh mint tea at the terrace café. Tip: visit in the morning.

National Festival of Popular Arts

Morocco’s cultural heritage is celebrated in this vibrant festival that brings together all regions of the country through traditional music, dance and performances. The events take place at some of Marrakesh’s most iconic venues.

Marrakesch International Film Festival

This annual festival celebrates cinema from around the world and brings together leading filmmakers, actors and industry professionals, highlighting Morocco as a dynamic centre for film and culture.
