Between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean
A meeting point between Africa and Europe. The Atlantic and the Mediterranean. European and oriental culture. Tangier is a port city, an international trade and financial centre, and a gateway to Africa – and one of the oldest cities in Morocco. Mediterranean and vibrant, the city of around 1.2 million inhabitants overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar.
Its greatest strength is its diversity: culture, nature and seaside holidays all in one place. Tangier is a source of inspiration, a place of stories and dreams, and a magnet for artists, eccentrics and intellectuals such as Eugène Delacroix, Henri Matisse, Tennessee Williams, Jack Kerouac, Truman Capote and the Rolling Stones. A lively city at the northwestern tip of Morocco. Beach life and cultural diversity combine here. Tangier captivates visitors with white sandy beaches, natural highlights and a vibrant urban culture – a paradise for all the senses.

More InformationTangier has always controlled one of the world’s most important maritime passages. Here the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea meet, only a few kilometres from Europe. Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans already used the protected bay as a trading port and strategic base. Over the centuries many empires fought for control of this important gateway.
Once known as the legendary gateway to Africa and a magnet for spies, artists and adventurers, Tangier today presents itself as surprisingly modern. Along the waterfront promenade cafés, hotels and beach clubs line the shore, while everyday life pulses in the Medina. From the Kasbah you can look across the strait all the way to Spain. Tangier today is young, urban, creative – yet deeply Moroccan.
Vibrant, authentic & exotic
Tangier’s Medina may not be the largest in Morocco, but it is highly authentic. Its lively markets, frequented mostly by locals, convey the true atmosphere of Moroccan daily life. Each trade has its own small quarter. Here you can shop at the gateway to Africa and enjoy mint tea on a shaded terrace.
White sandy beach with energy
Tangier’s beach in the bay is centrally located and famous for its fine white sand. Swim, sunbathe, water-ski or sail until sunset. In the evening the long seaside promenade comes alive with music and activity: athletes perform acrobatics, children ride ponies and families picnic by the sea.
Hiking and trekking adventures
Discover spectacular coastal trails around Cap Spartel and the Hercules Caves on easy to moderate hikes (2–4 hours) with breathtaking sea views. The trail to Plage Merkala offers wild, photogenic landscapes in just one hour. About 2–3 hours away, Talassemtane National Park offers waterfalls and impressive Rif Mountain trails for day hikes or multi-day trekking.
Grand & Petit Socco
The Grand Socco is the main square of the port city between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, connecting the new town with the Medina. This lively square is filled with shops, cafés, restaurants and cinemas. From a terrace café you can watch the bustling life before wandering into the Spanish-influenced Petit Socco.
Picturesque oasis
The Mendoubia Garden, located near the Grand Socco in the old town, is a green oasis. Ancient trees such as an 800-year-old dragon tree and a huge fig tree provide shade. Surrounded by palms, exotic plants and historic bronze cannons, the park invites visitors to enjoy peaceful walks away from the Medina’s bustle.
Bond movie location: Villa Forbes
In the Marshan district stands the villa of the late American billionaire Malcolm Forbes, who died in 1990. The villa served as a filming location for the James Bond movie, The Living Daylights. Perched above the cliffs, the white residence with its lush gardens offers spectacular views over Tangier Bay. Today the property serves as a residence for state guests.
Tanjazz
International artists present world-class jazz and blues performances, mainly at the Palais des Institutions Italiennes, the marina and other venues in Tangier. The festival blends contemporary jazz, funk, blues and Moroccan musical influences.
