More InformationThe Erg Chebbi dunes in southeastern Morocco are part of the Sahara and are characterised by their fine, orange-red sand, shaped by the wind over centuries.
The sparsely populated desert region in the Errachidia province once served as an important caravan route. Even today, the culture of the Berber communities living in nearby villages continues to shape this part of Morocco. Here you can listen to the silence of the Sahara, while the wind constantly reshapes the soft crests of the dunes. It is a place where time seems to stand still.
Spiritual music and Berber pizza
About 7 km south of Merzouga lies the village of Khamlia, known for its spiritual Gnawa music tradition. In the open music houses, local musicians invite visitors for tea, share stories about their heritage and demonstrate instruments such as the gimbri (lute) and qraqeb (metal castanets). The artist village also features a small gallery, and local restaurants serve Berber pizza (Madfouna), a regional specialty.
Desert landscapes, valleys and oases
The route into the desert follows historic caravan paths through the fertile Ziz Valley, passing the provincial capital Errachidia. Along lush palm groves and historic trading posts, the road leads deeper into southern Morocco until the majestic dunes of Erg Chebbi finally rise near Merzouga – revealing a desert landscape shaped by centuries of history.
Expanding your desert experience
Anyone who believes the desert is only about silence and contemplation will quickly discover otherwise. Camel treks, desert hiking, quad and 4×4 off-road tours, sidecar rides and sandboarding allow travellers to explore the vast desert landscape and deepen their personal desert adventure.
Caravan routes
Around Merzouga, camel treks symbolically follow the historic routes that once connected oasis towns with trading centres beyond the Sahara. A sunset ride to a desert camp, an evening around the campfire and a night beneath the star-filled sky evoke the atmosphere of the ancient caravan camps – reimagined for modern travellers.
A natural stress reliever
In the silence of the dune sea, relaxation reaches an entirely new level. Far away from digital noise, the endless horizon offers space for true deceleration.
The soft desert light and complete quietness ease tension, calm the mind and provide a deeply grounding sense of renewal.
Flamingo Lake or palm oasis
With a bit of luck, you may visit Lake Dayet Srij, also known as the Flamingo Lake or the Lake of Merzouga – although it is often dry. A beautiful alternative is the secluded Safsaf palm oasis, located away from the main camel routes. Nestled between hills near the Algerian border, it features a natural spring and a small river.
