A Journey Along a Route That Shaped Morocco. For centuries, gold and other precious goods travelled north from the south via trans-Saharan trade routes into Morocco. This journey follows the landscapes and places connected with that trade: from Marrakesh across the passes of the High Atlas to fortified earthen villages, green palm groves and finally the vast dunes of Erg Chebbi.
South of the Atlas, kasbahs and ksour tell of a time when trade routes passed through valleys and oases. Near Rissani lie the ruins of Sijilmassa, once one of the most important northern hubs of trans-Saharan trade. Recent excavations have even provided a rare material indication of the city’s gold economy. From there, the landscape changes once again: through the Draa Valley and the Souss, the journey continues into the Arganeraie and onwards to the Atlantic.

A Journey Through Morocco’s Many Facets
This route is defined by changing landscapes. Beyond Marrakesh, the road climbs into the High Atlas; south of the passes begins a world of earthen architecture and oases. Gorges and palm groves lead onwards to Erg Chebbi before the landscape changes again around Jbel Saghro and finally opens towards the Atlantic through the Souss.
Some stages are longer – deliberately so. On this journey, the road does more than connect the highlights: it reveals how dramatically Morocco can change within just a few hours. History Built from Earth
As you cross the High Atlas, Morocco visibly changes. Beyond the Tizi n’Tichka, red earth, broad valleys and fortified earthen architecture dominate the landscape. Ksar Aït Ben Haddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. UNESCO describes it as one of the trading posts on the historic route that linked ancient Sudan via the Draa Valley with Marrakesh. In the palm grove of Skoura, Kasbah Amridil illustrates how closely architecture, agriculture and oasis life were once connected.

The moment the colour palette changes beyond the Atlas. Green gives way to red and ochre, villages seem to be built from the same earth as the surrounding landscape – and the architecture begins to tell the story of the route.
Where the Sahara Begins
Near Rissani, the history of the Gold Route becomes tangible. Close by lie the ruins of Sijilmassa, an important medieval trading city and a major northern hub in the trans-Saharan connections linking West Africa, the Maghreb and the Mediterranean. During excavations in 2024/25, a ceramic mould used to produce gold coin blanks was discovered with visible traces of gold – an exceptional material indication of local gold coin production. A little later, the perspective changes completely: at Erg Chebbi, a sea of sand dunes rises from the stony desert. Light, wind and shadow continually reshape the landscape.

Oases Along the Caravan Routes
Between the Sahara and the Souss, the journey passes through a landscape where water has always shaped life and movement. Along the Draa, palm groves, earthen villages and old kasbahs line the route – a cultural landscape closely connected with the historic trade routes of southern Morocco. The drive leads through the stark mountains of Jbel Saghro and onwards into the green oases of the Draa Valley. This contrast makes the stage one of the most visually striking of the journey.

The way a green line of date palms suddenly cuts through an almost monochrome landscape. In the Draa Valley, it becomes clear why oases were indispensable lifelines for travellers and caravans for centuries.
Walls, Souks & Red Gold
In the Souss, Morocco reveals another side of itself. Taroudant lies behind imposing ochre-coloured city walls and retains the character of a southern Moroccan trading town through its souks and artisan districts.
The route also passes Taliouine, the centre of Moroccan saffron cultivation. During the short harvest season in autumn, the purple crocus flowers are picked by hand in the early morning before the precious red stigmas are carefully separated.

When the Land Opens to the Atlantic
After the Atlas, kasbahs, oases and Sahara, the horizon changes one final time. The air becomes milder, argan trees shape the landscape and eventually the Atlantic appears before you. Around Taghazout, beaches, surf culture, spas and modern resorts meet a cultural landscape inseparably linked with the argan tree. Traditional knowledge and practices associated with the argan tree have been part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2014.

No. The route, length of stay, accommodation and additional experiences are individually tailored to your preferences. However, due to the distances between the Sahara and the Atlantic, the complete route requires sufficient travel time.
This is one of our more driving-intensive journeys. Several stages cover longer distances. In return, you experience the transition from the High Atlas through kasbah landscapes and the Sahara to the Atlantic first-hand. You travel privately with a private chauffeur and can arrange individual stops along the way.
The Draa Valley connects the Sahara with the landscapes of the south and is historically closely linked with the caravan routes. At the same time, the stop breaks up the longer journey towards the Souss and makes the drive itself part of the landscape experience.
Yes. Erg Chebbi is a large dune region on the edge of the Sahara near Merzouga. Unlike the stone desert of Agafay, here you experience extensive sand dunes reaching up to 150 metres in height.
No. The dromedary ride is an optional experience. If you would prefer to explore the dunes on foot or by 4×4, we can plan the desert experience accordingly.
For the complete route, we particularly recommend October to April. Spring and autumn generally offer the most balanced conditions. During the height of summer, temperatures in the Sahara can become extremely hot.
Only if your travel dates fall within the short harvest period. Around Taliouine, saffron is generally harvested from approximately mid-October to mid-November, depending on weather conditions. The flowers are picked by hand early in the morning. As the season varies from year to year, we check the possibilities for your specific travel dates.
Yes. The coastline around Taghazout offers surf spots suitable for different levels of experience. For beginners, we select an appropriate beach and surf school according to the wind, season and conditions.
Accommodation is selected individually. Depending on your travel style, we combine riads, characterful kasbah hotels, lodges, a comfortable desert camp and a resort or boutique hideaway on the Atlantic.

Your private guide will accompany you to one of the most beautiful trekking villages in the Atlas Mountains: Ait Souka. From here you will enjoy breathtaking views of Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest mountain in North Africa. During the hike you will reach altitudes of around 2,000 metres while passing through picturesque Berber villages. The highlight of the day is lunch with a local Berber family.
The Ouzoud Waterfalls are among the most spectacular natural sights in Morocco. The water cascades down 110 metres in three impressive tiers, surrounded by olive groves and reddish rock cliffs. The area is ideal for hiking and exploring. Highlights include a visit to the Imi n'Ifri natural cave with its red stalactites, watching the local macaque monkeys, swimming opportunities and optional boat rides. Travel time from Marrakesh is approximately three hours.
Golfing in Marrakesh is easy and spectacular. The city offers an excellent selection of courses, including the historic Royal Golf Marrakesh (27 holes), Palmeraie Golf (27 holes), the impressive Amelkis Golf Club (27 holes) and Samanah Golf Club (18 holes). Play between palm trees with breathtaking views of the High Atlas Mountains and desert landscapes.
Riding a camel or dromedary is one of Morocco's most traditional and charming ways to explore the landscape. Your guide will take you on a half-day or full-day excursion off the usual tourist paths to discover hidden places and authentic encounters with local communities.
Skiing with views of the Sahara desert? It is possible in Oukaimeden, located about 75 km from Marrakesh. From December to April, ski slopes between 2,500 and 3,200 metres altitude offer a unique winter sports experience. During spring, a visit to the nearby Valley of Roses around Kelaat M’Gouna (approximately 50 km) is especially worthwhile, when millions of Damask roses are in bloom.
