From the fortified port city of Essaouira, the journey continues to Marrakesh and across the High Atlas into the south. Aït Ben Haddou, the valleys of Dadès and Todra and the dunes of Erg Chebbi reveal a Morocco of earth, rock, oases and desert. Then the country changes once again: cedars grow in the Middle Atlas, Rabat brings together historic city and modern capital, Chefchaouen lies among the mountains of the Rif – and Fès provides the cultural finale with its centuries-old Medina.

Earthen Architecture Between the Atlas & Sahara
Beyond the High Atlas, the colour palette changes. Ochre, red and brown dominate the landscape, while fortified earthen structures seem to merge with the mountains. Ksar Aït Ben Haddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. UNESCO documents it as one of the historic trading posts on the route that connected ancient Sudan via the Draa Valley with Marrakesh.

Valleys Between Rock & Oases
On the way to the Sahara, Dadès and Todra lead through landscapes of rock formations, river valleys, green fields and earthen villages.

How abruptly the landscape can change: only a few kilometres may separate dry rock walls from green fields. It is precisely these transitions that make the Grand Tour so special.
The Great Silence of the Sahara
At Erg Chebbi, the landscape becomes elemental. Sand, light and wind set the rhythm; the dunes change their shapes and colours throughout the day.
The stay in the Sahara is deliberately more than a photo stop. With enough time, there is space for sunrise and sunset, for silence and for selected encounters at the edge of the dunes.

Cedar Forests Instead of Dunes
As the journey continues north, Morocco changes once again. The dry landscapes of the south give way to highlands, forests and considerably cooler elevations. Around Azrou and Ifrane, cedar forests characterise parts of the Middle Atlas. Wild Barbary macaques also live here.

Historic City & Modern Capital
Rabat is different from Morocco’s other Imperial Cities: calmer, more spacious and shaped by the combination of historic architecture with the modern capital planning of the 20th century. UNESCO inscribed Rabat as “Modern Capital and Historic City: a Shared Heritage” on the World Heritage List in 2012. The ensemble includes both the new city developed under the French Protectorate and older districts and Almohad monuments.

No. Accommodation, length of stay and additional experiences are individually tailored to your preferences. However, the complete Grand Tour covers considerable distances, so the route requires a realistic timeframe.
For the complete route, we recommend at least twelve nights. Additional time is particularly worthwhile in Fès, Marrakesh, Essaouira or the Sahara.
T-014 is one of our most extensive touring journeys and includes several longer stages. However, the changing landscapes are a central part of the experience. You travel privately with a private chauffeur and can plan individual stops along the way.
September to May. The most balanced conditions for the complete route are generally from March to May and from September to early November. The journey combines the Atlantic coast, Sahara, Atlas and Rif – regions with significantly different climatic conditions.

Marrakesh

Chefchaouen

About 30 km from Chefchaouen, the breathtaking Akchour Waterfalls lie near the village of the same name. The medina of Chefchaouen, painted in shades of azure blue, is one of the most beautiful historic towns in Africa. At an altitude of around 600 metres, the town offers fresh mountain air and a maze of narrow alleyways, mosques, memorial sites and charming blue-and-white houses. Even though the imperial city of Fès lies about 200 kilometres away, the famous Blue Pearl of northern Morocco is well worth the journey.
