A Journey Along the Lifelines of the South
In southern Morocco, kasbahs rarely stand in the landscape by chance. They emerged where water made agriculture and settlement possible: along river valleys, in oases and beside ancient irrigation systems.
This journey follows that connection. From Marrakesh, it crosses the High Atlas to Ksar Aït Ben Haddou and continues into the palm grove of Skoura. In the Dadès and Todra valleys, you can see how water carved deep gorges into the rock and created green cultivated landscapes along their edges. At Erg Chebbi, this thread finally seems to disappear into the Sahara – yet even at the edge of the dunes, groundwater has been accessed for generations through khettaras.
What begins as a classic desert route becomes a journey that reveals how southern Morocco works: earthen architecture, agriculture, oases and desert as parts of the same story.
Skoura – More Than an Oasis
Many journeys through southern Morocco pass through Skoura on the way to the Sahara. We deliberately spend more time here. Beyond the line of palms lies an expansive oasis landscape of date palms, fields, earthen walls and traditional irrigation channels. It is here that you begin to understand why kasbahs developed in particular places and how closely architecture, agriculture and water are connected.
A guided tour through the palm grove therefore forms a central part of this journey. Once you understand the séguia channels, gardens and earthen architecture of Skoura, you see the valleys and kasbah landscapes that follow with different eyes.
A Green City on the Edge of the Arid Landscape
At first glance, Marrakesh appears to be a city of ochre, stone and dust. Yet its historic development is just as closely connected with gardens, palms and water.
UNESCO explicitly includes Agdal, Menara and the Palmeraie within the natural setting of the historic city and identifies the abandonment of traditional khettaras as a threat to its integrity. The central theme of this journey therefore begins here – long before you cross the Atlas.

Earthen Architecture Where Life Became Possible
Beyond the High Atlas, the landscape changes. Red earth, dry plains and fortified earthen structures begin to dominate the scenery.
Ksar Aït Ben Haddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and stood on a historic trade route connecting ancient Sudan via the Draa Valley with Marrakesh. Further east, Skoura opens into a landscape of palms, fields, earthen buildings and séguia irrigation channels, where Kasbah Amridil is one of the best-known surviving structures.

That the palm grove does not function like a single attraction. Only when walking along the paths between palms, fields, walls and water channels does it become clear that the kasbahs formed part of an entire living and economic system.
When Water Shapes Rock and Landscape
Between Skoura and the Dadès, the route changes again. Around El Kelaa M’Gouna, Damask roses fill the irrigated gardens and hedgerows of the valley in spring. Further east, the cultivated landscape gives way to dramatic mountain scenery. In the Dadès Valley, the river and road wind through ochre-coloured rock. Villages, fields and kasbahs follow the watercourse – a landscape that shows particularly clearly how closely geology and human settlement are connected.

Where the River Carved a Passage Through the Rock
Todra Gorge is narrower and more immediate than the Dadès Valley. High rock walls draw close together as the road and river follow the passage through the gorge. At the mouth of the gorge, green areas and settlements open up again. Here too, the same pattern becomes visible: water flows down from the mountains, enables agriculture and creates the conditions for permanent life in an otherwise dry region.

The clarity of the transition. Within just a few kilometres, rock walls, flowing water, green fields and dry plains alternate – revealing the theme of the journey almost like a cross-section through the landscape.
Water Beneath the Sand
At Erg Chebbi, the theme of this journey initially seems to come to an end. Before you lie sand dunes, wind and a landscape that appears completely dry at first glance. Yet Erg Chebbi also forms part of a shallow groundwater system. Along the western edge of the dune field, water was traditionally accessed through khettaras and shallow wells; around Hassilabied, traces of these underground water systems can still be recognised in the landscape today.

No. The length of stay, accommodation and additional experiences are individually tailored to your preferences. However, the distances between Marrakesh and the Sahara create a sensible minimum timeframe for the route.
The route includes several longer driving stages. However, the journey across the High Atlas, through oases and gorges and onwards to Erg Chebbi is an essential part of the experience. You travel privately with a private chauffeur and can plan individual stops along the way.

For the complete route, we particularly recommend October to May. Spring and autumn generally offer especially pleasant conditions. During the height of summer, temperatures in the Sahara can become extremely hot, while winter nights in the south can become considerably cooler.

The Dadès Valley is broader and characterised by winding mountain roads, rock formations, villages and fields. Todra Gorge feels narrower and more monumental, with the rock walls drawing closely together at its most striking passage.

Your private guide will accompany you to one of the most beautiful trekking villages in the Atlas Mountains: Ait Souka. From here you will enjoy breathtaking views of Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest mountain in North Africa. During the hike you will reach altitudes of around 2,000 metres while passing through picturesque Berber villages. The highlight of the day is lunch with a local Berber family.
The Ouzoud Waterfalls are among the most spectacular natural sights in Morocco. The water cascades down 110 metres in three impressive tiers, surrounded by olive groves and reddish rock cliffs. The area is ideal for hiking and exploring. Highlights include a visit to the Imi n'Ifri natural cave with its red stalactites, watching the local macaque monkeys, swimming opportunities and optional boat rides. Travel time from Marrakesh is approximately three hours.
