Where Water Shaped Landscapes, Oases & Earthen Fortresses

A Journey Along the Lifelines of the South
In southern Morocco, kasbahs rarely stand in the landscape by chance. They emerged where water made agriculture and settlement possible: along river valleys, in oases and beside ancient irrigation systems.
This journey follows that connection. From Marrakesh, it crosses the High Atlas to Ksar Aït Ben Haddou and continues into the palm grove of Skoura. In the Dadès and Todra valleys, you can see how water carved deep gorges into the rock and created green cultivated landscapes along their edges. At Erg Chebbi, this thread finally seems to disappear into the Sahara – yet even at the edge of the dunes, groundwater has been accessed for generations through khettaras.
What begins as a classic desert route becomes a journey that reveals how southern Morocco works: earthen architecture, agriculture, oases and desert as parts of the same story.
Skoura – More Than an Oasis

Many journeys through southern Morocco pass through Skoura on the way to the Sahara. We deliberately spend more time here. Beyond the line of palms lies an expansive oasis landscape of date palms, fields, earthen walls and traditional irrigation channels. It is here that you begin to understand why kasbahs developed in particular places and how closely architecture, agriculture and water are connected.
A guided tour through the palm grove therefore forms a central part of this journey. Once you understand the séguia channels, gardens and earthen architecture of Skoura, you see the valleys and kasbah landscapes that follow with different eyes.

Destinations beyond the usual routes
The accommodation reflects the landscapes of this journey: a riad in Marrakesh, a characterful kasbah hotel or boutique hideaway south of the Atlas, a retreat in the Dadès and a stylish desert camp at Erg Chebbi. The properties we combine depend on your preferred level of comfort, travel style and desired pace. Particularly during the cooler months, we pay close attention to ensuring appropriate comfort for cold nights in the south.
The cuisine also follows the landscape. Marrakesh reveals the full spectrum of urban Moroccan cooking – from traditional dishes served in a riad to contemporary gastronomy in Guéliz. South of the Atlas, the cuisine becomes increasingly regional: dates, olives, pomegranates, vegetables, spices and freshly baked bread reflect what the oases and irrigated gardens produce.
In the Valley of Roses, rose water adds another dimension, while at Erg Chebbi it is above all the setting that transforms the experience – dinner in the stillness of the desert landscape. The focus is entirely on the sensory experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. The length of stay, accommodation and additional experiences are individually tailored to your preferences. However, the distances between Marrakesh and the Sahara create a sensible minimum timeframe for the route.
The route includes several longer driving stages. However, the journey across the High Atlas, through oases and gorges and onwards to Erg Chebbi is an essential part of the experience. You travel privately with a private chauffeur and can plan individual stops along the way.
Because it is one of the best places to understand the journey’s central theme. In the palm grove, water channels, fields, palms and traditional earthen buildings sit side by side. A guided exploration of the oasis reveals how this cultural landscape functions.
For the complete route, we particularly recommend October to May. Spring and autumn generally offer especially pleasant conditions. During the height of summer, temperatures in the Sahara can become extremely hot, while winter nights in the south can become considerably cooler.
Depending on the weather, flowering and harvesting are concentrated into just a few weeks in spring, typically during April and early May.
No. We adapt the tour to your activity level. It can be enjoyed as a relaxed walk or – depending on planning and availability – as a guided bicycle tour.
No. The dromedary ride is an optional experience. If you would prefer to explore the dunes on foot or by 4×4, we can plan the desert experience accordingly.
The Dadès Valley is broader and characterised by winding mountain roads, rock formations, villages and fields. Todra Gorge feels narrower and more monumental, with the rock walls drawing closely together at its most striking passage.
Accommodation is individually selected. Depending on your travel style and preferences, we combine riads, characterful kasbah hotels or lodges, and a comfortable desert camp at Erg Chebbi.
Yes. Additional days in Marrakesh or Skoura, more time in the Sahara or an extension towards the Draa Valley or Atlantic coast can all be added individually.
